pattern mixing

Finding your own style is more than just looking good, it also says something about your level of confidence and how you present yourself to the world. If you can pull it off, I say wear whatever you want. Including endless combos of mix and match patterns.

But if this concept is way out of your comfort zone, then stick to these basic ideas and you should be good to go. This look is all about having fun with prints and maybe a little color theory.

  • Find balance by pairing one large or bold print with a smaller, more subtle one. This way you’ll avoid the dizzying effect of 2 busy patterns competing. Make one of your pieces the focus, while the other compliments.
  • Build a connection through color. By having at least one similar color repeated in your combination of patterns, the look will appear to be more cohesive than wild, tying everything together.
  • Another hint to ease you into pattern mixing territory are these four basic designs that will work with almost anything: leopard, floral, stripes, and polka dots.
  • If you’re still a little skeptical about boasting bold patterns but want to move away from the matchy matchy, then take baby steps. Mix things up with printed accessories, shoes, bags, scarves, etc.

Good luck and have fun!

  • You picked a great selection of styles here Stacy! I agree with you that there a close connection between our style and our level of confidence. I really like Rachel Zoe’s quote that says “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak” Thanks for the tips!
